laptops

Thu Feb 11, 2010, 3:56 PM
Have to buy a laptop...What should I get.  I need to use this thing for a while as a replacement for my PC so I'm probably gonna be playing a lot of games on it + using a lot of photoshop on it.  I'm horrible at choosing the right thing, the only thing I know to look for is if it's got 4GB of ram....any suggestions?  Above all else I'd like a nice screen...  I'd like to keep it under 1000$ preferably.  I can spend hours looking up random useless information on Wikipedia but DAMN if I can research laptops for more than 20 mins with getting confused/angry.

Stay away from gateways and Hp, they are prone to overheating when using their graphics cards for too long. Seeing as Photoshop is now relying on your gpu rather than cpu, you'd best get something with at least a 260m graphics card in it. Asus are great for their prices. I would recommend a Sager laptop, but that's only if you're willing to spend a little extra for the top of the line product. Just get an Asus most of their graphical capabilities outweigh most of it's competitors for it's price. I see people above me are mentioning buying a mac, but that would literally be spending $1000 extra for the same specifications of a less than average Asus laptop, but with OsX installed. Hope this helped.

I'll confuse things by throwing in my suggestion for a Fujitsu Tablet PC :D :D :D

That's what I do all of my art on.

Generally I hate laptops... More expensive for a crappier piece of machinery. But, since you need it, why not look into a used Mac or something like that?

I have a Toshiba Satellite A505 and I love it so far [link]

It cost me just a little above 1,000, but I also bought a 3 year warranty. Straight out it's about 600-700 I think.

I'd also suggest looking on cnet for reviews; they have both professional reviews of laptops and user reviews and they're pretty credible. That's where I researched laptops and picked mine from

mac if you can. though, just got a 17" hp pav few months ago and so far dandy it goes... i would have gone the luxury of a mac, but with budget i went the hp- in that i also got a 21.5" external monitor, adobe suite, and a few other knick knacks. i'll go mac sooner or later.

Also, not sure if you are a student or not, but if you are going to be buying graphics software, dont forget to use your student discounts. Lots of sites have them if you look for them, and they could save you hundreds of bucks.

Some people suggested you get a Mac.. But clearly Macs can hardly play any games, so do not go that route. Also, they will most definately run you over your budget. If you were going for a hardcore graphics computer, then maybe Mac would be your choice, but not if you want to be able to play 90% of the games out there on it.

I would also hesitate before going HP since they absolutely load their systems up with stupid unneeded programs that are almost impossible to remove and are a waste of space.

Other than that, just prioritize what you want first, if you want a really good screen more than anything else, start with that.
