I like my sci fi gritty and Ive been into postapocalyptic,retro futurism etc since i was a kid. But I admit the recent mainstream overdose makes it seem trite.

Hell yes its old! 50 years at least I supose from the old radio programs and books Ive read over the years. Stuff gets oveexposed after a while cause it works. Hot trends are made up of either some old good shit recycled with a new angle which looks new to those wet behind the ears or (very rarely) some new shit that people havent caught on yet is plain shit.

People who love this before always will. If your heart is there do it. That spark will show quality ,but if you personaly are bored with the theme dont bother!

It's not about the genre, it's about the characters. Having said that your knack for that style should make it a no-brainer for you.

I think, like any popular genre, it just needs to be kept fresh and individual to each artist. As long as you don't just follow a rule book of the norms of the style, it can be kept new.
